Background
Unger has been director of the news service at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 1991. Previously he worked for the Dallas Times Herald as deputy editorial page editor. Other positions held at the Times Herald were assistant features editor and columnist, books editor and columnist, assistant national editor and reporter. He worked as a reporter for The Kansas City Star from 1978 to 1980. He also worked for United Press International at its regional news center in Chicago as a night newspaper editor and also as state broadcast editor, and for UPI-Milwaukee as a reporter. He began his journalism career as a stringer for The Milwaukee Journal in 1975. He is the winner of the best feature story award from the Texas Institute of Letters and a Texas Headliners Club award for headline writing. Unger is a former Pulitzer Prize nominee.
